MPCA Voluneer Water Monitoring Program

Help protect your favorite water body with this program through the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. At least twice a month during the summer, volunteers measure water clarity using a secchi disk or a tube on your favorite lake or stream.  No prior experience needed.

Water clarity is an important indicator of lakes and stream health. It shows the amount of sun light penetrating into the water. Lack of sunlight in streams and lakes can be due to sediment, or excess algae. This data helps the MPCA makes informed decisons on watershed protection and restoration!
